Hi Joe,
I would not sweat the small stuff. No one is perfect. We all make mistake's it would not be life if we did not make mistake's.  I sure have made my share of them in my life.
About Vung Tau and R and R. From what were told R and R was Rest and Recuperation. When I was in country June 67' June 68' Black Scarf Battalion 1/2. We were told that if we had a confirm kill or captured a Viet Cong we would get a three day pass to Vung Tau. Well, while our Battalion was mopping up around the Long Binh area after The Tet Offensive.  Our Recon. 29er medic and I captured a Viet Cong and we received a three day pass to Vung Tau. And it sure was nice . I even had the chance to go surfing. I have the picture's to prove it. Got me some boom boom as well.
I could not believe on how many G.I's was there at Vung Tau.  Made you wonder if there was anyone left in the Jungle's up North fighting the Viet Cong and NVA.
This Fall and winter I will rewrite my Memoir's, so I can have it edited. I have over 113 pages written and I will be adding more.
Life goes on.

Guys

Thanks for the support.

I should have done a better job at researching about China Beach but I didn't and I was in error. I will just shrug the harsh criticism off. Thank you for your kind words and encouragement.

I haven't mentioned another critique I received which really floored me but I am dealing with it. I was told it was an absolute shame for me to make financial gain from a book about Vietnam since I am making money off those who were killed and those severely wounded. The person asked how I could live with myself. I had a tough time coming up with an answer as at the time I was shocked, angry, confused, and disappointed. All I said to the person at the time was that I am sorry he felt that way and that I wanted my book to help in keeping our stories alive and passed on to future generations and it was my way of recognizing and honoring all that served, especially those killed in action.

I hope this feeling is few and far between.

My financial gain will be a donation to the 2nd Infantry Regiment Memorial. I have yet to break even and I am okay with that since I have been able donate books to Veterans down on their luck, local libraries, etc.

Joe, stories need to be told and put in print so that future generations understand what really went on in the jungles of Viet Nam. You earned the right to any financial gain from not only this book, but for being there too. I will never forget how I felt coming home and being spit on by a couple of Hippies in San Francisco. I didn't deserve that treatment then, and you shouldn't have to endure it now either. Keep the money Bro YOU earned it.......Take care Bro & be strong.  Norm

Joe,

What kind of stupid comment that was condemning you and the book. Does the individual condemn every single book, movie or made for TV story about every war since the world began? Does this person condemn Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, Francis Ford Coppola, Clint Eastwood, Joe Galloway and General Hal Moore, how about Ken Burns and Cornelius Ryan for profiting from their work? I could go on and on. Pick on one pick on them all.

Joe you did well and should be very proud of your work and how well it is doing, hang in there and ignore the troubled few.

I got this e-mail today. I had mailed this family a free, signed copy of Call Sign Dracula about two months ago.  This made my day! This is what it is all about, connecting with comrades and families to keep our stories alive and being read. Generations to come need to know about the Vietnam War.

Hi Joe,

Sorry it's taken so long to get back to you.  You sent us a copy of your book after Dick Schmidt mentioned to you that our brother/brother-in-law (Ron Arenas) was killed in Viet Nam on New Years Eve in 1968.

We only have memories of what it could possibly have been like for the "boys" that were there but to read from vets what it was really like is appreciated. It is so hard to comprehend.

Years later meeting with Ron's best friend who was with him when he died and reading books like yours gives us a much better perspective of the friendships made, the fear, the devastation it had on the minds of the not quite men that were sent there to kill and be killed.   It opens our minds to get a much better idea of what it was like to be in your shoes.

Thank you so much for the book.  And, THANK YOU for your service.

I just want to take this time to say thanks to all for your support of my book, Call Sign Dracula- My Tour With The Black Scarves April 1969 to March 1970. The book continues to do well.

I have been able, thanks to all the support, to provide free copies to a lot of veterans and their families, libraries throughout the country and now am able to provide funding for the 2nd Infantry Regiment's Memorial at Fort Benning. It has truly been a blessing.

Merry Christmas to all.

I just wanted to share this e-mail with you guys. This sure made my Day.

Hey Joe, how are ya? I hope all is well! I just wanted to let you know what happened this weekend... Saturday afternoon, my 11 year old son walked into the living room carrying a book... he says, "Dad, what's this book about Dracula?" I laughingly said to him, "it's not about Dracula, it's a a book about the Vietnam War!" He says, "oh, Dracula is like a codename? Ok, I'm gonna read it anyway!!" He got home from school today, and the first thing he said to me was how awesome the book was, and that he had finished it!! He said they never talk about that war at school, and he never realized exactly what it was, and reading it through someone else's viewpoint was very educating!! By the way, this boy has never finished an entire book in his life, but this one kept him so invested, that he read it in a day and a half!! I just wanted to share that with you!!

Keep in touch my friend...

Sincerely,
Jason M. Monnard

I don't know Jason except through e-mail. He was with the Big Red One during the War with Iraq.

Hello Everyone

It has been a great week as I made contact with two fellow Vietnam comrades:
RC Montemayor and Art Munoz

We served together with Alpha Company 1/2 in 1969. I have not been in contact with them since 1969!

Art and I were awarded the CIB on the same orders in July 1969.

RC and I were in the same platoon.

Both are listed in my book, Call Sign Dracula. RC called and told me how he really enjoyed the book and wrote a review on Amazon.com about the book.

If you know of a Vietnam veteran down on their luck let me know and I will send them a free signed copy. It is such a small token but may bring them some cheer.

Again, what a great week.

Hi Everyone

The book sales of Call Sign Dracula continue to do well.

A derivative of selling books is that it leads to the contact of fellow soldiers I served with.  Just recently I made contact with Richard Gropp who served with Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division during 1969.

In 2016 I made contact with over eight soldiers I served with in Vietnam. These are awesome events and really are a true blessing. My last tally is over 45 soldiers contacted.

Look out May 2017 Reunion as Alpha Company 1/2 may have as many as 15 soldiers present and hopefully more.

I am also able to send donations to the regimental monument, the 2nd Infantry Regiment Association, and the Association of the First Infantry Division. I have been able to provide free signed books to needy veterans, local libraries and VFW/American Legion Halls.

Thanks everyone for your continued support of the book.

I don't know if you made any changes on the draft that you sent to me.  It is a very good read and accurate, and that's what counts Brother. You did good.  I salute and honor your Brother's that were killed in Viet Nam.  I know its not easy at times when we think  about them.  I guess I could say I think about my Brother's that I knew personally, and those that I did not know who Gave Their All......... everyday.
I finished my[comp] memoir's last January it took me almost a year to write them.. Now comes the task of  editing it and add the story about The Black Scarf's.
Now that Spring has arrived here in Oklahoma, I have so many projects that need to get done.  I will buy your book and read it this coming winter.
Once again Congratulations on your new book.

I never expected to see all positive reviews about my book, Call Sign Dracula, but I did not ever expect to see any one question the validity of the "Black Scarves battalion".

Here is a most recent review on Amazon.com:

1.0 out of 5 starsQuestioning Actual Account
 on March 11, 2017
Even though there are pictures of who Joe Fair is inside the book I find it more a fiction story than an actual account of the time he had spent in Vietnam Not just because of the book being written by a amateur writer but because of all he didn't say about when the "black scarves" did get into combat situations. Quite brief and glossed over descriptions. And am wondering if there actually were a unit calling themselves "black scarves." Is possible, I haven't taken the time to research them because less than halfway though the book I'd lost interest in the story completely and discarded it. Not recommending this one.

I appreciate Jim's criticism of my writing skills but it sure hurts to see him question the validity of the Black Scarf Battalion. I wish I could meet with him and tell and show the fine history on the 2nd Infantry Regiment and how the 1st Battalion became the "Black Scarves".

This really hurts considering the 276 Black Scarves killed in Vietnam.

My name is John Shanks. I served with A 1/2 from Oct 68 to Oct 69. Served as a grunt mostly with a short stint as RTO for the platoon. Moved to the rear area as senior man in company and did whatever was required to help out the guys in the field. I ordered 2 of your books and gave one to my best friend that did not serve (married with 3 kids). His response to reading was he had a whole new attitude and immense respect for the guys who had to go to Nam. This from a person who is hard to impress. I do not remember details about a lot of things that happpened as my mind tends to blot them out and I enjoy reading this board as it brings clarity to the shadows in my mind. Thanks for writing the book. Keep the Black Scarves pride out front.

What a great 2017 2nd Infantry Regiment Reunion in Pigeon Forge, TN!

Such food, fun and fellowship with the best people one could ever expect to be with.

Many of you bought a copy of my book, Call Sign Dracula and for that I say thank you, thank you. To me it is not about the money but to keep the memories alive and going on what we did in Vietnam. War is not John Wayne, Clint Eastwood and video games. Younger generations need to understand this.

Salute to you guys, all that have served, are serving or will serve.
