I was in A Co 2/2, 3rd Platoon Leader from 68 til Feb 69 when my track hit a mine and me and the 50 gunner were medivac, I had Sgt Bondsteel, Lt Tucker was 1st Platoon Leader, and Cpt Bowen was the Co, my memory doesn't work after that I recall some faces and all the places. If anyone out there knows of anyone from A Co, I would appreciate any names. Thanks, Steve |

Glad you made it here from Bandits site.
For you, and all others who served with James Bondsteel and did not know, he was awarded the Medal of Honor (The last given out by Nixon, in 1974) for his actions on HWY 13, 24 May 1969.
http://www.mishalov.com/Bondsteel.html
Regrettably, James Bondsteel was tragically killed in April 1987 when a logging truck lost its load and it crashed into he and his pickup truck at the Kniec River Bridge in Alaska, shortly after his retirement from the Army. K-FOR HQ in Kosovo was named in his honor, Camp Bondsteel. |

I met Dan Bradbury and his lovely wife Inoeye (spelling) living in Carmel-by-the-Sea back in the mid 80s. He may have moved after retiring as a civilian at Ft Ord. Have not re located him, but will keep trying.
Maling is of course former Secretary of this association and a former Bandit 6 as well. One not shown, though he may have come in too late is last A Co XO, Lt Pavone. Last I knew he was a VP with Toyota USA.
Ron Cato was also a Bandit and is located. |

Anyone been able to track Craighead or Ronie? Ronie called me once around 2005 but I was not able to reconnect since. I do not recall their first names. Both men were in B Co. when I was there 9/68-2/69. I did not remember Ronie he remembered a lot about me. Both these guys were good men. |

Reply with quote | #42 | Here are three names of three men killed and the dates I remember. Curtis Boots track 214 mine directly under the man 10/5/1968. Sheffield, machine gunner( I cannot find the etching off the wall that I have so I can't remember his first name. I think it was a Bible name.). Killed during squad size night ambush on NVA. The claymores we put out failed to go off. The date would be 12/15/68. Next AM we captured an 81 base plate and a new AK-47. Lots of blood trails. A sargent asked to see the AK and promptly showed Cpt. Hansen what he captured. I never saw the weapon again and didn't care until later. Moot point now. Larry Bartell was a 50 gunner as was Boots (Iguess that would be TC) on an M113 and was hit in the head. He was killed 12/27/68. This was during an action near a ville near rubber called Ap Charac I believe.
I also recall a man named Norris who was 50 gunner. After his gun failed to operate during a mad minute I do not recall ever seeing him again. He was alive when I last saw him.
Anyone remember these BROthers?

What exactly did you mean when you said that the Bn was "devastated in Oct-Sept 1966". The Bn was operationing in and around Phu Loi in Operation Lam Son II, a pacifacation operation. There were several run ins with the enemy but nothing that could be called devastating. At the time there was also a rear detachment back at Lai Khe working on constructing more permanent structures such as mess halls, barracks and the like.
As far as being first with APCs I'd say that would go to the Motor Pools when they started learning how to repair and mantain them and train personel to drive them. The Bn returned to Lai Khe in December to begin changing over to and training in operating as a mechanized infantry unit, we were a regular infantry Bn up until that time. The 2/2 officially became a Mechanized Infantry Battalion on 1 Jan 1967.
Larry G HHC 2/2 66-67
I guess you misunderstood when I indicated that we were the first to get APCs, I meant that I was there when the BN changed as a whole to Mech Inf. I arrived about 3 weeks before the the Official Designation.
When I arrived in country and to Lai Khe we were told that two of the companies of the 2/2 had sustained very heavy causalities on Operation Attelbrough (sp) and that one of the companies was nearly wiped out to the man. May not be true, but that is why there were so many replacements sent to the 2/2 in Dec 66 and Jan 67. Or so we were told.

Mark, Good to see that you are back! It has been quite a while since you’re first posting, I thought you might have gotten upset with my response to you’re posting. The 2nd Battalion was not part of Operation Attleboro as far as I can find in the records. They did sustain numerous casualties in the Battle of Ap Bau Bang in November 1965 and The Battle of Ap Na Mat in December 1965 but there was nothing major after that. The reason for the build up of the battalion was being changed to a Mechanized Infantry unit from a regular Infantry unit. There was a need for tracked vehicle drivers, mechanics, TC’s and the like and also the rotation of troops going home. I can’t remember how many, but there was a need for quite a lot of personnel. That went on between late November 1966 and actually into February 1967. The official date of the battalion being Mechanized was 2 January 1967. Larry G |

Reply with quote | #49 | Mike,
I served with the 2nd Battalion, as I stated in my posting. Perhaps it was just a typo on your part. I tried to list all that I could remember and what they did, I know that more will come to me over time.
Accurate rosters of personnel who served with the 2 battalions just does not seem to be available, at least I haven't seen any. Have you looked at this entire thread or any other on the message board to see if any of the information you are looking for is posted. There is a possibility that names, dates and etc could be obtained from army archives but I do not know at this time where to begin. One much remember that people were coming and going on an almost daily basis back then. It looks like for now the only way to get names is to rely on guys memories and them posting it on this message board.
