Welcome to the 2nd Infantry message board! Thanks for posting all of the names that you remember, it some times helps other to remember those they served with.
As far as the "young man" you remember as Sunny perhaps we could narrow down who he was. Do you remember the time period that he hit the mine? Things like the month and even the day? You stated that he passed away, I am assuming that he was killed, correct? A name like Sunny could have been "Sonny" and he could have been a Junior, you never know. With a date and his possibly being a Junior we could look at the KIA roster we have and see if we can come up with a name.
Give it some thought!

YES I DO HAVE MORE INFO, AND YOU ARE RIGHT IT IS SONNY, I CANT SPELL FOR CRAP. ANOTHER FRIEND OF MINE WAS ON SONNY'S APC WHEN HE HIT THE MINE. HE TOLD ME IT WAS ON SEP. 20th 1968. YES LARRY HE WAS KILLED, THAT IS A HARD WORD FOR ME TO USE. I ONCE CONTACTED THE BIG RED 1, AND THEY SENT ME THREE NAMES, BUT THEY ALL DIED 2 OR 3 DAYS LATTER. THEY SAID MAYBE HE DID'NT DIE THAT DAY. I DON'T REALLY. I HAD THAT PAPER WORK AND MUCH MORE FROM MAKING OTHER CONTACTS IN MY BRIEF CASE, AND SOMEONE TOOK MY BRIEF CASE RIGHT OUT OF MY OFFICE. SO I LOST EVERY THING I HAD. IF THERE IS A WAY TO FIND HIM I WOULD BE FOREVER GRATEFUL. THANK YOU FOR TAKING AN INTEREST.

Try this page,
http://thewall-usa.com/
scroll down to where you type in "Casualty Date" not Casualty range. Hit Search. About two pages will come up. See if any name is familiar. |

Willie, I just got off the phone with a friend of mine who was also with Company C at the same time as you and he verified that "Sonny" is Raymond Howard Albert Jr. He is on Panel 43W-Line 44. Our KIA roster shows that he was with the 1st Battalion but that is incorrect. I sure hope that this is the information you are looking for. Larry Grzywinski Historian 2nd Inf Regt Assn |

Hi, and THANK YOU ALL for ALL your service, you and your fallen brothers and sisters ARE NOT, and WILL NOT BE FORGOTTEN. I am just finishing the book 'Courageous and Proud' by Samuel Vance, he was a Sgt in 2/2 I believe, in 1965-66 and fought at Ap Bau Bang and Ap Nha Mat, and was injured there, was also awarded the Silver Star as well as Purple Heart. I was wondering if anyone knows of his status, if he's alive, or has passed... I often look deeper than just the cover of a book, and am always searching for additional info about the given soldier/battle. . I have found Samuel Vance's take on the war, his comrades, and life, one from the perspective a negro, and as a black NCO, in the early Vietnam War, to be a interesting, deep, and good one. I'm a white man who was only 12 when the war ended, but knew MANY vets, and own, and have read 400 plus Vietnam biographies, and battle histories, with a smattering of Geo-and Domestic Politics of that time. I have a deep appreciation for all that you've all done for each other, this country, and the world at large. Any help regarding Sgt Samuel Vance is greatly appreciated. THANK YOU ALL FOR MY FREEDOM, WELCOME HOME. |

Jaun; Sgt Vance went over with us. He started off as a SQD LDR in the 1st platoon and became platoon SGT. I was in the 3rd PLT so i didn't have much to do with him.But all I ever heard was good.

Reply with quote | #59 | Add to Willie's List for C 2/2 after April 1969:
Captain Tom Kelly: C 6; died back in May 2009 according to another posting SGM Hartmann Lt. Hughes: C16 SSGT. Larry Robertson, C35, Milwaukee, WI. Sgt. John Walker, C31, Brooklyn, NY Sped. "Shorty" Martin, RTO PFC. Gutkowski, somewhere in Ohio SFC. Box, was the platoon leader I replaced. SSGt. Emilio Pena from Texas somewhere, had been a squad leader; became C35, and was replaced by Larry Robertson. Lt. Paul Cormier, had ben company signal officer; Was a fellow ROTC graduate I missed him by one day when I reported to the company.
The Cogenhower he mentioned from Iowa, I think was Coughenhower, who was a squad leader.
The Don Llovelace, I thnk was Don Lovelace, another squad leader, who it seems to me was from South Dakota.
"Animal" was "Animal", the golf on one of the tracks.
Recognize some of the other names, but can't place them.

Reply with quote | #61 | I was with A 2nd/2nd (Mike platoon) from Nov 66 to Nov 67.
I have been able to locate two folks I served with (Paul Trudeau, died a few years ago, and Bill Hansen, ran into him in Fremont, Ca.
I have searched the web for: Bill Hunter (wounded and sent home), Wallace, "Stretch" Renike, SSgt Rousseau, Jim Barnes, Kelly Horne, Fred Nethercutt, Jim Baker and Steve Gestner, but with negative results.
I am retired now and living in Knoxville, TN.
Glad I found this site!

Reply with quote | #63 | Thanks! One name I forgot to mention was "Doc McCormic". He was our medic and a fine person. I was reminded of him when I received an email from the brother of another medic killed in Vietnam. The medics name was "Joe Fazio". I did not remember him but maybe someone else does.
My first platoon Sgt was an E-7 named Zuniga or "Sgt Z". I remember a guy named "Dunn", also. One of the guys was Juan Gonzales or "Speedy" (he was a great guy!). Anyway, you spend a lot of time pushing Vietnam out of your mind over the years and it is difficult to later recall the names.
Bill Hunter was a good friend who was sent home missing a part of his foot.
I'll think of other names in the future.

Reply with quote | #64 | Hey guys,
Just received an email from Rodger Shinneman and he has been in contact with Fred Nethercutt (both squad mates from Vietnam). Haven't been able to make contact since I left at the end of October 1967. How great is that! Talk about memories!

Do you remember a Steve Bradbury, 50 gunner Charlie Company? He was killed below the Black Virgin Mountain, I believe July 1969. Have you heard from Sgt. Carmondy and Michael Mounce, they were in 2nd Platoon with me, before Lt. James Clark was killed.
Thanks,
Mike Fredson

Reply with quote | #69 | I met a fellow at the VA named Troy Bullock. He couldn't remember much about his tour, no the unit, not even the division. The only record he had was a medical sheet that listed three med stations he had been to. Looking at it one entry seemed to say, (all hand written and not two clear) HHC, 2BN, 2INF, Jan 66 - July 66. Troy had been with 4.2 mortars so HHC would make sense. Also, when I mentioned the 1st ID he said that sounded familiar, as did Lai Khe. So if any of you guys remember Troy Bullock, 6'1, light-skinned, black dude please email me. Thanks, John
