To all 2nd Infantry Regiment Association members, veterans, friends and active duty warriors, the following unofficial information regarding the potential reflagging of the 1-2 Infantry Battalion is provided.

I have been informed, unofficially, that it is the intention of the Army to re-flag the 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment in Schweinfurt, Germany,  as the 1st Battalion, 2d Infantry Regiment on 17 March 2008.  This information comes as a complete surprise to me.  Further, the 1-2 Battalion, then in Germany, will become part of the 172d Separate Infantry Brigade and move from Schweinfurt to Grafenwoer after their next OIF rotation.  Alpha Company of 1-18, soon to be 1-2 Infantry, will move to Grafenwoer now.

Further changes are anticipated, but have not yet been announced at this time.  I am not aware as to the impact these changes, if official, will have on the 200th Anniversary of the Ramrod Battalion or on the planning for the Challenge Coin.  As I receive further information from the Army or the 1st Infantry Division, I will forward it promptly on to the Regimental Association.

RAMRODS lead the way!  Duty First.  God bless you all.

Tom,

It has been busy for us as we retrain the formation to go back to Iraq.  We are in the middle of our mission rehearsal exercise in Hohenfels, Germany.  We have British soldiers from the Scots Guard playing as the Iraqi Army soldiers.  We also have over 500 civilians on the battlefield helping to simulate conditions in Iraq and teaching our soldiers how to conduct operations amongst the population.

Lots of good learning going on for the vets and the new guys alike.

We plan on sending a team led by CSM Salinas to the reunion in October.  Will let you know exactly how many and their timeline when we get confirmation on TDY and other issues.  We have one SFC whose uncle served in the Black Scarves during Vietnam.  I would like to send him along with one or two of our recent Ranger School graduates.

We will also forward you a copy of our battalion newsletter.  The first edition is in draft form now.  We are using our training rotation to exercise all of our systems including how we communicate to our families and other organizations.  We will make sure you are on the distribution for the newsletter.

Tom,
We just got the correct mailing address yesterday. I will fly tomorrow,
so the situation is a bit fluid in Iraq right now. That being the case,
we should be there in two weeks or so. We expect to remain there for a
short duration 60-90 days and then move again inside Iraq. I will keep
you updated. Thanks for keeping us in your prayers.

Noli Me Tangere,
Steve

Address for the Black Scarves (This does not include A/1-2 IN. They
will go to another location in Iraq.  We do not have the information
yet.  As soon as we get A Co's mailing address, we will send it.)

The 1st Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment suffered a loss last week.

I received the following message from LTC Miska concerning the death.

Gentlemen,
I regret to inform you that we lost a soldier several days ago.  We performed a memorial this morning for SGT Jose Escobedo from El Paso, Texas.  His wife and three children have returned to Texas from Germany.  They plan to conduct a funeral in the coming week.  I do not have the details yet, but am trying to find them out.  Following the funeral, Mrs. Escobedo plans to return to Schweinfurt for a community memorial ceremony in about two weeks.  We believe she intends to move back to the US following the service and clearing the garrison in Schweinfurt to live with family in the El Paso area.

SGT Escobedo was a Fire Supporter from 1-77 Field Artillery working within B/1-2 Infantry at Patrol Base Hamiyah.  He had thirteen years in the military, ten in the Marine Corps and three in the Army.  If you have someone in the El Paso area who would like to attend the funeral on behalf of the Regiment, we will ask the family for permission to attend.  If they would like attendance, we will send the details of the service.

Back In Black!
Noli Me Tangere!

The following information comes from the Department of Defense:
