The entire brigade is coming together at Fort Hood as we speak. Tentatively, there is an activation ceremony on either the 17th or 19th of April with a brigade run on the 20th. As of today, the Army has not designated a Command Sergeant Major. I will let you all know who it is as soon as I find out. Thanks LTC Daniel Hurlbut

Since our arrival at the end of June, the task force has been busy receiving its equipment. Our area of operations is a challenging mix of wide open desert floors, huge (up to 8,000 ft) mostly rock scarred mountains (that have little trees), and well irrigated, densely populated river valleys. Our AO is large, about the size of Rhode Island with approximately 75,000 people. While not a large population, the people are nearly all farmers who live clustered together near the fields in which they work. The area is the historical birthplace of the Taliban and its spiritual leader, Mullah Omar and promises to be a great opportunity for the members of the battalion. We are working in a NATO environment and with Canadian, British, and other coalition partners' militaries on a daily basis. Your Ramrods enjoy trading pieces of US equipment for other nations "kit" when they have the opportunity. For now, we are focused on finishing our preparations for the combat and look forward to reporting back on our combat operations in the coming weeks.

2nd Battalion is on the ground in Afghanistan! Our Advanced Party did a great job setting up operations here and we are in the final stages of receiving our equipment and final personnel. The battalion is busy undergoing some required theater specific training and orientation to our new area of operations. The Army has separated us from the rest of the Duke Brigade Combat Team due to a need for forces elsewhere in the country. We are looking forward to working and fighting alongside many coalition partners over the next year in the Kandahar Province.
I will write more later as details become available and am able to write.

SERIOUS INCIDENT BRIEF TO FRG: 4 SEP 2008 While conducting a ground assault convoy, an element from C Co 2-2 IN was engaged by enemy forces. While attempting to maneuver to a better position in order to suppress the enemy. One vehicle was struck with an Improvised Explosive Device. As a result of the attack—PVT Vincent Winston (ST Louis, MO) was killed and 4 other soldiers were wounded in action. PVT Winston was a single soldier. He is survived by his parents, and extended family that still reside in Missouri. His memorial service is tentatively next Friday, I would ask that those who can attend—please attend. I will send the official invitation thru the FRG channels next week. The 4 wounded soldiers are currently receiving care for their wounds. They were all evacuated in serious but stable condition. The unit was able to send representatives to see them at the Field Hospital before they were evacuated. All were conscious and able to telephone their loved ones. All four will likely be making their way to BAMC or another major medical facility shortly. The Department of Defense does not release information on Soldiers, who are wounded in action (WIA) or injured in accidents. Names of the injured, their condition, and treatment are statutorily protected by the Privacy Act and the Health Reporting and Information Protection Act and by Army and Air Force and Department of Defense policy. We will attempt to gain authorization from the soldier and family to release their names in order to accept well wishes and support from the Ramrod Family. We have a new address for sending packages to our troops in Afghanistan.
During the Reunion in Colorado Springs we were told that packages addressed to "Any Ramrod Soldier" would most likely not be delivered. The military is requiring all packages to contain the name of a soldier.
I contacted LTC Hurlbut, Battalion Commander for the 2nd Battalion and got this reply today. By using this method the packages will be assured of getting to a soldier who needs it and to the company of your choice. Please don't forget that there are now more companies in the battalion than there were in Vietnam and we don't want to leave anyone out.
The address will be "coded" to make sure it gets to a deserving soldier.
Please address all packages to:

God Bless our troops and their leaders! Tom Copeland 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment Tom We can always use personal hygiene items, cards, any type of board games and paper back books. We are at a new FOB that we have built ourselves and do not have access to those more normal items. Thanks for all you do! Dan DUTY FIRST! LTC Daniel S. Hurlbut CDR, TF 2-2 IN Ramrods! Kandahar, Afghanistan ========================= Originally posted 04 Nov 08 On thread Care Packages For Our Troops in Afghanistan LTC Hurlbut, CO of 2-2 IN, talked about board games for the troops in Afghanistan.
I spoke with my nephew yesterday about what sort of games the troops might want to have. He spent a tour in Afghanistan, followed by a tour in Iraq.
His suggestions are as follows:
Checkers Chess Guess Who
Monopoly takes too long to play and they never had that much time so he suggests staying away from any board game that would take too long to play.
Decks of Cards are always welcome
Books and magazines. Stay away from the pornography as it is not allowed in Muslin countries. Hunting and Fishing, Cars, People, etc are all good choices. They don't have to be current issues, so gather up that stack of magazines, and all those books you finished reading that are laying around the house and send them to the troops.
The USPS offers "Flat Rate" boxes to military. It makes no difference how much they weigh, the price for shipping them is the same. The largest carton they have cost me around $12.00 to send and it was crammed full of goodies.
The Holidays are just around the corner so lets get those packages rolling. If there are local organizations, VFW, American Legion, Scout Troops, etc., in your area who are sending packages to troops see if they are willing to take the address that is posted on this web sight and send a package or two to our soldiers.
Remember how it was when you got your packages, and make a few troops happy.
Thanks

Oringinally posted by Doug Tabb (1-22-09) on Funeral for Cpl Keith Essary,Second Infantry Fellows: Picture this scene. Over 500 people at the funeral of Cpl Keith Essary, 25 outriders on motorcycles at the head of a 2 hour long procession to honor the hero of a 300,000 person community(Dyersburg, Tennessee). Representatives from all Branches of the US Military to include a Brigadier General to present the Bronze Star and Purple Heart Medals to Keith's next of Kin. Keith's Company Commander, CPT Trevor Voelkel from Charlie Company, 2/2 Infantry gave his moving respects during the funeral. Follow this procession for 2 hours from the funeral at the local high school to the grave site where along the way all traffic stopped with the occupants getting out of their vehicles with their hands over their hearts. Citizens coming out of their homes with American Flags and their hands over their hearts. No intersection was passed without either a State Trooper or Sheriff's car blocking oncoming traffic. I saw at least 25 squad cars along the route supporting the funeral. This was an amazing site to see. I have been to many funerals but this was the top. I presented Mrs. Anita Essary with a Challenge Coin and letter of condolence from the president of the Second Infantry Regiment Association. Her comments to me were a heartfelt thank you and thanks for the outpouring of sympathy from all who came to the funeral. She also expressed thanks to all veterans for their service to the country. Origninally posted by Jim Stephans on thread SSgt Joshua Rath's Funeral, January 18-19, 2009 My wife and I attended the visitation for SSgt Joshua Rath on Sunday evening in Decatur, AL. Joshua and his family were highly respected and appreciated in the community as evidenced by the large turnout for the visitations and the funeral. We met and talked with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Rath, his two brothers and two sisters and his fiancé. I gave my regimental coin to his father, and he placed it on display on his son’s pillow alongside his 1st Infantry Division coin. The family appeared to be very appreciative that the regiment had sent representatives. The Army was well represented with active members from the 2-2 Infantry who were home on leave at the time of Joshua’s death, active members from Ft. Hood, and Army CAO SFC fox. Awards of the Bronze Star (V) and the Purple Heart were presented to the family by Maj. Gen. Taylor at the funeral on Monday morning. The General also read letters from SSgt Rath’s battalion and company commanders and several fellow soldiers. Two soldiers gave moving tributes to his leadership ability, his friendship, and his dedication to the Army. SSgt Rath’s sisters and brothers and his fiancé delivered warm and loving remarks during the ceremony. The Gold Star and Blue Star Mothers organizations presented banners to his mother. The funeral drew 400-500 people. The Patriot Guard Riders, a motorcycle group, supported the family at both visitation periods and at the church, and provided escort, along with local police officers, on the route to the cemetery. Hundreds of members of the Decatur community turned out displaying American flags to line the cemetery route despite snow, strong winds and low 30’s temperatures. They had a long wait before the procession as the funeral continued for over 2 hours. This was a very impressive expression of affection and patriotism! Unfortunately, we were unable to attend the grave side ceremony as weather was deteriorating and we faced a 5 hour drive home. I was informed that full military honors were to be performed at the grave site and regretted that we were unable to stay. Presentation of the regimental coin and the Association President’s letter to the family added a nice touch to our visit, and I think we should always try to make this a part of our support to the bereaved families in the future. It was an honor to be able to support the Rath family.
